New Zealand Health Group offer $20,000 Māori Health Leadership Scholarship

The New Zealand Health Group is proud to announce its Hiwa-i-te-rangi Māori Health Leadership Scholarship that worth up to $20,000. The purpose of this scholarship is to enable more Māori to be in decision making leadership roles within the health sector.

The Hiwa-i-te-rangi Māori Health Leadership Scholarship programme is one of New Zealand Health Group’s initiatives in building equity in health and wellness in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Ranei, Group Executive Cultural Advisor from New Zealand Health Group, says “It is great to be part of an organisation that is being responsive to Maori health leadership for Aotearoa.  The timing is perfect given the health reforms announced and New Zealand Health Group wanting to be a contributor to the solution of building Maori equity”.

Their workforce development scholarship invests $20,000 per annum to individuals who are on a trajectory to make a difference in health equity outcomes.  A maximum of $10,000 can be awarded to any one individual in a year and the scholarship can be used to pay for tuition fees, living costs or any bills related to the study.

Hiwa-i-te-rangi is the final star that signals Matariki is nearing its end.  *Hiwa means ‘vigorous growth’ and its name is associated with the promise of a prosperous season.  It is to Hiwa that Māori would send their dreams and desires for the year, in the hope that they come true.

This scholarship is open to anyone in Aotearoa who is of Māori descent and a desire to build on their training and qualifications to address Māori equity through leadership.  They must also be able to demonstrate their commitment to increasing Māori leadership within the health sector, show their passion for health equity and building a responsive health service for Māori and show their commitment and involvement in Te Ao Māori. Applications for this scholarship will close at 5pm Wednesday 31 August 2022.

“New Zealand Health Group have always had a strong commitment to training and the professional development of its people, it’s a proud moment when you see that commitment extend into the community that we work in.”, says Anita, General Manager from MySkill.

“I look forward to this scholarship growing and taking on different shapes to meet its goal of supporting health equity for Māori”, she continues.
